5 Reasons WHY You Need Food Storage

Learn the 5 reasons why you need food storage and how food storage can help you in major emergencies or unexpected life events.

Why do you have food storage? Also, why would you need food storage?  I get asked these questions ALL the time So I’m sharing with you my reasons for storing a year’s supply of food.

1.  Save money

These are the ways you can save money by having food storage:

No extra trips to the grocery store.  Instead of running out of a baking item and having to head to the store to buy it; run down to your pantry to grab another one.  This saves an extra trip to the grocery store… which in turn, allows you to go grocery shopping once a week.  Going shopping once a week saves money because you’re less tempted to make impulse buys.

Learn what your “staple” food items are in your pantry and plan a variety of meals around those basic ingredients. This saves money for 2 reasons.  One, you quit trying all those Pinterest recipes with random ingredients which go to waste.   Two, you’ll quit buying extra items because they were on “sale” and you never used them.

Over on your food budget for the month, you can eat a food storage meal or two.  This saves money because you don’t have to buy the ingredients.

Easily see what food you have and haven’t used.  One, this allows you to do a quick inventory before grocery shopping.  Two, it allows you to “eat up your pantry” and see what foods you really do and don’t use.

The money saved from not going to the store can be better used for other items, or put into savings.

2. Financial Emergencies

Loss of job or between jobs.  Instead of spending $50 a week on groceries, eat from your food storage.  The $50 can go to other bills you would have been paying with your income.

Huge unexpected medical costs come up that you are unable to pay for from your savings account.  Let’s say you spend $250 a month on food.  When you buy fresh food items only and then eat from your food storage for 3 months, you could save around $200 a month. As a result, that leaves you $600 in 3 months to pay towards that medical debt.

Major break down of car or house that’s unexpected (like sewer main break, which happened a few years ago).  Again, similar to the previous two, eat from your food storage and use the rest of the extra money towards the unexpected expense.

Unfortunately, these are only short-term solutions.  Replenishing your supply after an emergency is just as important as using the supply for an emergency.

3. Winter Storms

I lived in Nebraska for 7 years. It didn’t happen very often, but there were times in the winter when they expect “Blizzard” conditions.  We could get 12-24 inches of snow in one day!  On cold winter days before the predicted blizzard, people rushed to the store to get items they needed.  I was able to save time, gas, and energy by staying home because we have a stocked supply of food, toilet paper, heating supplies, and more.   If the storm lasts longer than predicted, we don’t have to worry because we have prepared for the unforeseen future!

4.  Church

Next, the church has asked us to prepare for the future with food and finances.  We have been asked to store food in case of various emergencies.  When the Lord asks me to do something, I’m not going to doubt it, because he knows WAY more than I do.  Having enough food for a year in an emergency, allows us to share what we have with others.

5. Natural Disasters

Last but definitely not least are natural disasters.  Floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards, and all other horrible things are happening all around us.  When there is a huge disaster sometimes the grocery stores run out of food or are unable to get deliveries for a few days. Having food storage and a water supply allows us to have the supplies and food we need.  (Like mentioned in #3, we don’t have to fight the crowds and high prices)

For natural disasters or evacuations, it’s important to have a 72-Hour Kit, aka Bug Out Bag.  These bags contain a 3 day supply of food, water, and other important information you can grab on the go when in a hurry.

In Conclusion

There are so many reasons why you need food storage and why you should be preparing for your unseen future.  Being prepared makes US feel safe and happy!

  1. Actually, I’m so glad to see this spectacular page. It was really useful in my articles and essay. In addition of my marks become more higher. Also, I learned a lot in my entier life.

  2. Plastic food storage is certainly affordable and lightweight, but research shows that plastic can often leach chemicals into our food and drinks, which can harm our health.

    1. That is true. Although, I feel if you are using your food and rotating it every couple of years before the expiration date, it should still be good.
